For now, though, historians, narrative designers, programmers, and gaming enthusiasts alike can benefit from Scott's effort. Created in 1982, Zork is a typical adventure game that does not use graphics. This solo game-making hero was Will Crowther, who was in college at Stanford at the time. That game was created in 1976 by one man. This feature is still experimental, the game may not work properly. Zork itself wasn’t a totally original idea at the time and it takes quite a bit of inspiration from the game that started the text-only genre, Colossal Cave Adventure, otherwise known as ADVENT. Gamasutra, a site which covers news for the game development industry, also noted that Activision still owns the rights to Infocom games and could request a takedown if it wanted. Text-based / Spreadsheet For small DOS games like Zork, you can play online immediately with your browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer.). But they've been joined by creators using new tools for spinning interactive, text-focused games like Twine and Ink, some of which are used as middleware in modern graphical game productions big and small. Ive gotten to the point in it where Im fairly proud of what Ive made so far, although its not complete I think that its ready enough to post on here. The interactive fiction community is still quite lively, and people are still making games using ZIL and the Z-machine today. Over the last couple of months Ive been working on a zork-style text based adventure game to kind of crash-course teach myself Python. There are interpreters available today for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android, among other platforms. At the time Infocom was active, personal computers did not have a widely shared architecture, so the path ZIL's architects took was to allow game creators to write instructions for a virtual machine called the Z-machine, which was then brought to the various platforms of the day.
